The Burnand name has been synonymous with magnets and magnetic systems for over 100 years and is an integral part of Rotary Engineering. Rotary Engineering has full machining capabilities enabling a full range of new magnets to be manufactured in our Sheffield plant with either a cast or fabricated body.

The heart of the magnet, the coil, can be wound either from copper or from aluminium depending on the design of the magnet and its eventual application.

Products and Services

Circular magnets
High power circular lifting magnets are designed for efficient handling of all kinds of scrap including heavy metal scrap, steel turnings, cast iron boring and ingot scrap.

Lightweight circular electromagnets are targeted particularly at scrap handling operations where high lift to magnet weight is needed because of restrictions on crane and lifting capacity and the nature of the scrap being handled allows lighter weight magnet construction methods employed.

Permanent magnets
Rotary Burnand offer a range of permanent magnetic lifters along with a selection of electro permanent magnets.

Permanent magnetic lifters are ideal for workshop fabrication and electro permanent magnets are suitable where the loss of electrical supply could lead to a dangerous condition

Rectangular magnets
High power rectangular magnets are designed for efficient handling of single layer billets, RSJ, rail or similar steel section as well as single bundled tube and bar sections.

Lifting Beams
Rotary Burnand has full design and manufacturing capability for a wide range of spreader beams. Where multiple magnets are used to lift long plates or assemblies spreader beams offer a simple, effective solution.

Power supplies, Controls and battery back-up
Power cable feed / recovery can be achieved through several means including spring return & powered reeling drums (with multiple slip rings where required) cable baskets and catenary systems.

Battery back up safety systems can be fitted to all electromagnet systems to guard against power failures.

Magna Wedge – the result of extensive and intensive work and has been descried as a turning point in motor technology. This effort has resulted in making MagnaWedge a product with consistent characteristics of high mechanical strength, uniform magnetic properties and close dimensional tolerances to meet with requirements of international standards.

MagnaWedge can be used as a slot wedge in open slot design motors.

Magnet repair and refurbishment
Rotary Burnand specialise in Magnet repair/refurbishment.

Whether or not the magnet has been manufactured by us, we can repair it.

Utilising our design expertise with the years of experience, we can re-design the inner workings of “old” magnets to use the latest, currently available, cost effective materials. See our section “refurbishment” for details of our procedure.

Bespoke design
Over the years our range has been developed and expanded. All variations are not recorded on this website. Although the magnet you require is not listed here, it may be in standard range. Magnets for use under water or other extreme conditions are all part of our remit.
