For lifting steel billets, blooms, ingots, bars and certain types of forgings, this magnet is ideal, since the full pole area is available for direct contact with the material.
The high concentration of flux in the pole pieces gives excellent depth of penetration and the centre suspension plate does not become magnetised, therefore preventing any flux leakage through the suspension chains.
Where rolls or other round materials are to be handled the pole pieces are shaped to eliminate the tendency to roll and also reduce the air-gap of the magnetic circuit. On hot-lifting duty the pole pieces are extended to give adequate protection to the coil and also allow air circulation to assist in cooling.
For handling long lengths of material, e.g. pipes, rods, bars, etc., two or three bi-polar magnets may be mounted on a spreader beam.
